In light of the current political climate in the Middle East, my work has evolved to mirror the escalating political unrest and humanitarian crises in the Middle East, through my lens: a Muslim Arab woman living in the West, witnessing disaster unfold, whilst examining the past and understanding the present through a critical, anti-colonial framework.
Throughout history, art has been a potent tool for social change, emphasizing the community's pursuit of dignity and rights under oppressive regimes, including both local political leaders and Western influences. They act as a means of reclaiming the agency taken from us.
The use of oil paint- a medium linked with the European Renaissance - further embodies this act of reclamation. By employing a medium associated with Western culture, I aim to subvert and challenge the Western colonial narrative, using it instead to craft pieces that oppose these agendas. My exploration of Middle Eastern politics and history frequently presents me with impactful images. These paintings reinterpret widely circulated photographs, whose sources have faded, through my lens, transforming them to reflect my journey of learning, seeing, and experiencing.
